I’m still hoping for a comeback for Romantic Comedy. They took away my chick lit, and who knows when that will return to the forefront, but romantic comedy, while not on the A list these days, still has a few stars. Rachel Gibson is one of them.
Gibson is one of those authors who gets away with breaking the rules…namely the rule that says you can’t write about sports heroes. (Susan Elizabeth Phillips is another I’m familiar with who pulls it off.) Now, I’m not a sports fan in general, but there’s no denying the hot heroes that sports figures make.
So the latest book on the rom-com horizon is Any Man of Mine by Rachel Gibson (out 4/26). I give it 4/5 stars. It’s got a lot more going for it than just hot sports guy, too.
I’m a huge fan of reunion stories because couples who have a past have so much more baggage than newly united couples. Autumn has carried her anger at Sam for more than five years and has endured despite the way he treated her. Sam has run from any emotional entanglements for so long, he doesn’t now how to deal with the realization that he’s the same type of absent father his own father was. When Sam decides to make up for the past and, in the process, falls in love with Autumn and the idea of being a real family, Autumn is sure she can never forgive him.
Any Man of Mine is poignant and touching. We get to revisit some of the Chinook hockey players from past Gibson books and see how things are going with them, too, which is fun. Sam and Autumn’s 5-year-old son Conner is realistically drawn and a fun kid to read about. I love that the characters are all flawed and real, and I was up late into the night to see what happened to them. Highly recommended for romance fans who like a touch of humor and a few tears.
If you love romantic comedy, definitely check out this book. No need to really read it in any order. Though Gibson’s books are connected, they each stand quite nicely on their own. Again, this book comes out on Tuesday, April 26, but is available for pre-order at Amazon now.
Happy Reading!
